Surprise Beginning

John’s story is one of surprises. Born in Baltimore in 1973, his parents were not expecting him. The technology was such that twins weren’t always detected. To quote his mother, the doctor started to walk away after his brother was born BUT the nurse called him back and said, “oh doctor I see a foot, I think we have another baby coming.”

His mother always told him, “you were born breech . . . feet first! So you landed on your feet  and kept on going!”

On January 31, 1973, the doctor came out and said congratulations, you have two healthy baby boys! His father, a new immigrant thought they were joking. Prior to the twins’ birth the parents had two first names decided  and was quite literally a surprise. He was twin number two and his Father gave him the name saved for a second child in the future with the middle name Jonathan, which translates to “gift of God.”

School Years

Always the competitor, he had a chip on his shoulder from a young age as his older twin was always significantly taller. Today John is 5’6 and his twin is 6’5. John was into extreme sports as a child, not one to follow the groups. He gravitated to skateboarding, cycling and weightlifting. He loved watching team sports and not playing them, most notably football. At age 15 he responded to an advertisement for a Job. “Love Sports Make Money Talking About It.” The office happened to be a few blocks from his school. In 1988 as a 15 year old  ninth grader in his first year of high school, he applied and 35 years later he’s still at the same office and same location – a rarity in any business. Although he had a Job all through high school and at the same time got straight As, that chip on his  shoulder started to rear its head by 11th grade.

Once he got his driver’s license he started hanging out with older young adults 18, 19, 20, 21 as he always looked older for his years. In his high school years his bad decisions as a minor came back to haunt him. Fast forward to November, 1990, while driving to high school much to the shock of his parents he was arrested on the way to school . . . We won’t bore you with the details here a simple Google search will do.

His story is one of resilience and determination. At the age of 17, he fell in with the wrong crowd but chose the hard route and served his time. When given the opportunity to speak, he chose silence and this silence was respected later in life. He went from prison to the penthouse after serving a 27 month federal sentence at the young age of 18. Upon his release, John was respected and trusted for being able to keep secrets, which allowed him to continue life unaffected by his past decisions. He chose to follow a code of honor and stay silent, which paid dividends as these groups knew they could share their information with him.

Prison Life: School Of Hard Knocks

Everyone loves a good underdog story. His life could be a movie. John graduated high school in June of 1991, instead of going to college he walked into federal prison in June of 1992 at the age of 19 years old to serve a mandatory minimum sentence of 27 months. Separated from his family he spent the remainder of his 19th year in prison. His entire 20th and while his twin could have his first drink at 21 he was celebrating his 21st in prison.

Post Prison

John was released from prison on September 27, 1994, exactly 27 months after he walked in. Three months shy of his 22nd birthday , the first thing he did was call Larry “the Duke” Dukehart who welcomed him back with open arms. Duke was connected with the largest betting groups in the country at the time and needed a young man who could fly around the country and have meetings with these very private people who wanted their sports betting systems kept safe while also being monetized. John was up for the Job as everyone knew his “silence was golden.” The same rules applied on the streets of betting sports. These groups knew any man that sacrificed his freedom by keeping his word was a man that could be trusted.

At the. time, large groups started forming as media outlets were writing stories on the “godfathers” of sports betting, the coveted “Computer Group” who took the books for over 14 million dollars in the infancy of computer betting modeling.

By age 22, John was on National TV & Radio working under Larry “the Duke” Dukehart, famed oddsmaker and handicapper. Larry was the Modern day Jimmy “the Greek” Snyder and the founder of the first sports handicapping service in the country selling daily sports advice. Larry added John to his TV & radio shows as he was a natural in front of the screen and on air.

After only a year out of prison, John was a notable personality in the sports betting world. Flying around the world finding and hiring the sharpest betting groups and consulting with many of the largest sports bettors locally & abroad.

By 2005, bits of his professional life were incorporated into the movie “Two for the Money” starring Al Pacino & Matthew McConaughey. Larry was contacted as an advisor to the film.

John went from being Larry’s most trusted employee to taking over the entire operation a mere 10 years after his release at the young age of 32. Like everything else in John’s life, nothing came easy. Larry, at the age of 56, with no prior health issues was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer, a cruel disease usually not detected until a terminal stage. Four months later, Larry passed away on September 27, 2006 passing the torch to John, and exactly 12 years to the day of his release, John was now running the entire operation. Who would have thought in a span of 12 years he would have risen from Prison to the Penthouse? The passing of his mentor made it all the more bittersweet.

Eric was not one to celebrate his new found freedom in clubs, bars, parties or the like he was almost 22 in age but 42 in wisdom. He was well beyond his years. He lived, breathed and immersed himself in sports. Everyone knew his story and that his “silence was golden.” The most respected betting groups in the world desired to do business with him knowing their secrets were safe. Any man that was willing to sacrifice his freedom to keep his word was a man they wanted to do business with.

He went from prison to the penthouse after serving a 27-month federal sentence at the young age of 19. Upon his release, John was respected and trusted for being able to keep secrets, which allowed him to continue life unaffected by his past decisions. He chose to follow a code of honor and stay silent, which paid dividends as these groups knew they could share their information with him.

By the age of 22,  John, using his middle name , was on TV nationally as a Sports Betting Analyst flying around the world dealing with the largest sports betting syndicates, groups and bettors alike.

In 2005 bits of his professional and  personal life were incorporated into the movie “Two for the Money” starring Al Pacino & Matthew McConaughey as His employer Larry Dukehart was contacted as advisor to the film. Like any movie it was sensationalized with some truths woven through it.

Why the Pseudonym?

Eric Jonathan was released from Prison in 1994. Once he went back to work he used his full legal name with clients. He would say, “my friends call me John but my full name is Eric Jonathan Pathi. John makes the money and Eric spends it.” That would always get him a good laugh. However, Google search was released four years later in 1998. Back then, unlike today where there are hundreds of so-called expert handicappers, there were only a few and competition was fierce.

In a non-social media world, these “touts” would try to steal market share from the larger companies that were spending thousands at a time on their brand. A perfect opportunity would be to smear a tv & radio personality fresh out of prison. “You don’t want to purchase advice from him. Don’t know he was in prison? Go ahead and Google him. Obviously, this worked, as clients would call the office asking about Eric’s past as if that had anything to do with the games he was recommending.

Today that’s what we would call a good old fashioned “smear campaign,” and it was a distraction for clients. Clients would Google his real name and he would have to explain his past, over and over again which obviously had nothing to do with producing winners for clients. So his Italian side of the family said you need a pseudonym, a stage name, a pen name and to use D’angelo which translates to angels, since he was an unexpected surprise.

If it was good enough for actors, poets, and musicians it was good enough for him.

Eric “Jonathan” Pathi became John D’angelo. This allowed him to not waste his time dealing with the Google algorithm because after all if you “do the crime, you do the time” and that should stand for something.
